Roughly one third of the food produced in the world for human consumption every year — approximately 1.3 billion tonnes — gets lost or wasted, according to an FAO-commissioned study.
The document, Global Food Losses and Food Waste, was commissioned by FAO for Save Food!, an international congress being held in Düsseldorf 16-17 May at the trade fair of the international packaging industry Interpack2011.
The exhibition accompanying the congress was conceived and realised by our friends at brandmission. We had the pleasure to create an interactive visualization for them which was installed as a two-screen desk within the exhibition.
Using a simple touchscreen interface visitors were able to retrace a number of the key findings of the study by laying hands on the actual data: touch the 3-dimensional bar chart’s axes to reduce the grid of values to a comprehensible scope, rotate the diagram for a better view, or touch the shortcut buttons for a guided tour to the information hidden therein.
