For the Hessisches Landesmuseum (museum of the state of hesse) MESO Web Scapes was asked to think of a new way to visualize one unusual feature of the museum: it hosts a huge number of different departments and is not thematically restricted. You’ll find geological and archeological artefacts there as well as jewellery from the Art Nouveau. Yet still there are strong cross relations between exhibits from different departments:
A brooch from 1920 might show the same peacock that is artfully stuffed and shown in the zoology department, or what might a mammoth have in common with the “Humilitas quasi cedrus exaltata sum in libano”, a religious book from 1160?
The “HLMD Universe” is a simulated three dimensional room filled with little labels, one for each topic. The visitor can easily navigate through the labels by simply clicking and thereby moving forward or backwards. Opening a label reveals the exhibits inside where more information and mostly the explanation for the thematic relation is given. (Universe and website currently only available in German!)
